University of Florida Bands Presents the UF Concert Bands in Concert


The University of Florida College of Fine Arts School of Music would like to announce a concert on Wednesday, April 25, 2012. The concert, which will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the University Auditorium, features the University of Florida Concert Bands under the musical direction of Mr. Archie G. Birkner, IV, Mr. Sameed Afghani, Mr. Mark Doerffel, and Mr. Michael Phillips. The program consists of John Barnes Chance’s Incantation and Dance, Gordon Jacob’s William Byrd Suite, Derek Bourgeois’s Serenade, Norman Dello Joio’s Scenes from the Louvre, Vincent Persichetti’s Pageant, Eric Whitacre’s Lux Aurumque, Alfred Reed’s The Hounds of Spring, Charles Carter’s Overture for Winds, and Dmitri Shostakovich’s Galop.

Retired UF Director of Jazz Studies Gary Langford & The Jazz Project have concert on April 24th


Celebrating Jazz Appreciation Month,
Gainesville Friends of Jazz proudly presents Gary Langford & The Jazz Project. They will be performing on Tuesday, April 24, 2012 at 7:30 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship located at 4225 Northwest 34th Street in Gainesville. Scott Koons, President of Gainesville Friends of Jazz, is the producer for the concert.

UF Wind Symphony Hosts Pulitzer Prize-Winning Composer Paul Moravec: Concert features Alban Berg’s Kammerkonzert and World Premiere of Paul Moravec’s Wind Symphony
The University of Florida College of Fine Arts School of Music invites you to attend a concert tonight, Thursday, March 29, 2012. The concert, which will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the University Auditorium, features the University of Florida Wind Symphony under the musical direction of Dr. David Waybright. Guest appearances will be made by conductor David Goss, violin soloist Dr. Janna Lower, piano soloist Dr. Kevin Orr, and Pulitzer Prize-Winning Composer-in-Residence Paul Moravec. The program consists of Alban Berg’s Kammerkonzert, Aaron Copland’s Emblems, the world premiereof Paul Moravec’s Wind Symphony for Concert Band, and Frank Ticheli’s Blue Shades. Pre-Concert Lectures will begin at 7:00pm in the Friends of Music Room in the University Auditorium, featuring a discussion of Alban Berg’s Kammerkonzert with University of Florida Assistant Professor of Musicology Dr. Silvio dos Santos and a discussion of Paul Moravec’s Wind Symphony for Concert Band with the composer.

Jacaré Brazil Chamber Concert at Whitney Laboratory for Marine Bioscience in St. Augustine on April 7th


On April 7th at 7:00 p.m. the Whitney Laboratory for Marine Bioscience will host the University of Florida School of Music, featuring a chamber concert by Jacaré Brazil, one of the premier ensembles of its kind in the United States.

Jacaré Brazil represents a diverse performance ensemble, specializing in the musical traditions of Brazil. Under the direction of acclaimed guitarist and singer Welson Tremura, the Jacaré Brazil collective comprises four complementary ensemble sections: percussion, voice, guitar, and choro (Brazilian instrumental ensemble).

The program on April 7, presents different combinations and arrangements featuring Jacaré Brazil’s unique ability to explore the rich music of Brazil from various musical perspectives. That includes “Jacaré Violão” (guitar ensemble), and “Jacaré Choro” which includes the guitar, cavaquinho (a small four-string guitar), flute, violin, bass, pandeiro (Brazilian tambourine), and cello.

Guest Artist Andy Harnsberger will perform with the UF Percussion Ensemble on April 5th


Guest Artist Andy Harnsberger will perform with the University of Florida Percussion Ensemble on Thursday, April 5th at 7:30 PM in Room 101 in the Music Building. The performance will feature Harnsberger as soloist on two of his composition, Vertigo and Palmetto Moon. The concert will also feature a performance by the Sunshine Steelers Steel Bands. The concert is free and open to the public.

The concert, which will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the University Auditorium, features the University of Florida Symphonic Band under the musical direction of Mr. John M. Watkins, Jr. Guest conducting appearances will be made by Anna L. Palsma. The program consists of Charles Rochester Young’s Tempered Steel, the world premiere of Martin Ellerby’s A Soliloquy for Solferino, Clifton Williams’s Symphonic Dance No. 3Fiesta,” Michael Ivanovich Glinka’s Russlan and LudmillaOverture,” Quincy Hilliard’s Requiem, and Frank Ticheli’s Symphony No. 2, III. Apollo Unleashed.

The program consists of William Walton’s Crown Imperial, Percy Aldridge Grainger’s Molly on the Shore, Vittorio Giannini’s Symphony No. 3 for Band, Paul Richards’s The River with Only One Bank, Vincent Persichetti’s Divertimento for Band, and Alberto Ginastera’s Danza Final from Estancia.
