Jenny Baxley Lee appointed Lecturer in UF’s Center for Arts in Medicine


Jenny Baxley Lee
, MA, has been appointed as Lecturer in the University of Florida’s Center for Arts in Medicine (previously known as theCenter for Arts in Healthcare).  Ms. Lee comes to the Center from Creative Clay in St Petersberg, FL, where she served as Director of Arts Services.  In her work with Creative Clay, she directed arts in healthcare programs in three hospitals and raised over half a million dollars in grant funds. She is a Board Certified Dance/Movement Therapist and Child Life Specialist with 12 years of professional experience.  Ms. Lee’s expertise includes arts administration, program implementation, curriculum development and training, arts advocacy and grant writing.  Her life work is dedicated to exploring the capacity of dance and the arts to impact the health of people of all ages and abilities in clinical, educational and community settings.

Announcing the Arts in Medicine Programs at UF

Shands Arts in Medicine and the UF Center for Arts in Healthcare are pleased to announce a new identity that recognizes our long-standing relationship.  As of February 1, our programs will be referred to collectively as the Arts in Medicine Programs at the University of Florida. The UF Center for Arts in Healthcare will be re-named the UF Center for Arts in Medicine, and Shands Arts in Medicine will retain its original name. 

About the Arts in Medicine Programs at University of Florida 
Over the past two decades, Shands Arts in Medicine has pioneered the delivery of the arts in healthcare, seeding 21 programs in Florida while being replicated around the world. In 1996, the Center for Arts in Healthcare (now the Center for Arts in Medicine) was established in the College of Fine Arts, and has become the most comprehensive education and research center for the arts in healthcare in the nation.

The Center for Arts in Healthcare at UF is recruiting students for the annual spring break service learning trip to Franklin County, Florida. Students will be helping residents in the rural community improve health literacy and access to healthcare through arts-based initiatives. With 23.1% of the residents living under poverty level, Franklin County is faced with many challenges and the need to address the disparities is dire.

CAHRE Presents Lectures by Edith Hubert and Jenny Lee

 
On Wednesday December 14, 2011 two candidates for the Lecturer in Arts in Healthcare will be on campus and will be giving short presentations.  Edith Hubert and Jenny Lee will each discuss a past, ongoing or possible future activity that exemplifies her vision of the intersection of the arts with health and healthcare. Ms. Lee’s presentation will be from 10:00 to 10:45 AM in the Dean’s Conference Room in FAA and Ms. Hubert will present from 2:30 to 3:15 in the same location. The Center for the Arts in Healthcare Research and Education is pleased to be hosting these presentations and cordially invites all to attend.

Gainesville Sun:

Catching a play, musical act or dance performance Monday was as easy as walking around the University of Florida campus.

The 12-hour marathon of cultural happenings, called “random acts of culture,” was intended to increase awareness and appreciation of artistic opportunities at UF. It marked the kickoff to a month celebrating the arts and humanities at the university and beyond.

Alligator: Organization fair celebrates national arts, humanities

Artistic students met the first Monday of October with a dancing gold crystal and a flash mob on the Reitz Union Colonnade.

The UF College of Fine Arts and the Fine Arts College Council hosted an arts and cultural opportunities fair Monday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Reitz Colonnade in celebration of National Arts and Humanities Month.

With about 70 campus and local clubs and organizations participating, the fair offered students a chance to find unique ways to connect with the art community.

UF kicking off National Arts and Humanities Month with an arts and cultural opportunities fair

Oct. 3 is marked as the “kick-off” date for the National Arts and Humanities Month (NAHM), with an Arts and Cultural Opportunities Fair to feature community and campus organizations related to arts, culture and humanities from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the J. Wayne Reitz Union colonnade. Participation is free to attendees.

There will be a special presentation at noon during the fair. Dignitaries and guest speakers, including UF President Bernie Machen and Mayor Pro Tem Thomas Hawkins, will address attendees. President Machen is expected to talk about the importance of arts and humanities in the higher education learning experience and Mayor Hawkins will present a proclamation on behalf of the City of Gainesville.

National Arts and Humanities Month is upon us and the University of Florida has some great events planned for its celebration, the first of which are less than a week away on Monday, October 3! Don’t miss your chance to help kick off NAHM with gusto!

The Kick Off events on Oct. 3 are:

12-hour Cultural Marathon
“Random acts of culture” throughout campus, aimed to increase awareness, appreciation and excitement for artistic opportunities at UF.

UF Campus Opportunities Fair
Academic units pair with students and community organizations to promote opportunities to join, explore and enjoy the arts and humanities in our area.

Amber Danielecki joins CAHRE

The Center for Arts in Healthcare is very pleased to welcome Amber Danielecki to their  staff. Danielecki joins the Center as a program assistant and brings with her a tremendous amount of experience and enthusiasm for their programs. She is a Spanish major at UF and will graduate this spring. In her time as a UF student, Danielecki has done a tremendous amount of volunteer and community service work., including leading the Arts & Health at UF student organization. She also volunteered with CAHRE last spring on their rural communities project.

UF alum hosts an International conference on Music and Medicine

A UF Alum Dr. David Akombo founded the Interdisciplinary Society for Quantitative Research in Music and Medicine which recently held a very successful inaugural conference on June 3rd 2011 at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. The conference brought together the most erudite and well published scholars in their fields including Dr. Mark Tramo, Director of The Institute for Music & Brain Science, a founding member of its Executive Board, Associate Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School and Don Campbell a world renowned author of “The Mozart Effect.” The 2nd annual conference will be hosted by the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia.

Parkinson’s patients find relief through dance

New research shows that people suffering from Parkinson’s Disease can significantly improve by dancing. From June 3rd through June 5th, the Mark Morris Dance Company from New York will be at Shands Hospital in Gainesville to demonstrate to dance instructors how to work with Parkinson’s patients. WUFT-FM’s Richard Drake talked with University of Florida School of Theatre and Dance faculty member Jill Sonke about this unique component of Parkinson’s research.
