SOM alum presents paper at National Conference

Aaron Keebaugh (Ph.D. Musicology 2011) presented his paper “Asleep Among the Son of God’s Disease: Mikel Rouse’s Failing Kansas and the Legacy of Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood” at the National Conference of the College Music Society November 2012 in San Diego.

Presently, Aaron teaches courses in music history and World history at North Shore Community College in Danvers, MA. He is a music critic for The Boston Classical Review.

About Charlie Cummings’ work, Mudfire says: Charlie Cummings is well-known for his artworks combining ceramics and printmaking. UF SoM alum Christina L. Reitz (Ph.D. Historical Musicology, ‘07) is an Assistant Professor of Music at Western Carolina University where she teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in musicology.

Recently, Dr. Reitz has been contracted to write two entries for the Music in the Social and Behavioral Sciences Encyclopedia through Sage Publications (anticipated publication date August 2014).

Dr. Reitz will present her research entitled “Monster Concerts: Gottschalk’s Brobdingnagian South American Festivals” at the College Music Society’s International Conference in Buenos Aires, Argentina in June. Dr. Reitz also presented the following papers this past spring: “Sacred and Ecological Works of Meira Warshauer” at the Athena Festival in Murray, KY and “The Civil War Concert Tours and American Departure of Gottschalk” at the Nineteenth Century Studies Association in Fresno, California. For the Nineteenth Century Studies Association, she serves on the Board of Directors and the Publicity Committee and hosted the national conference in Asheville in 2013.

MacKenzie Moon Ryan (Ph.D. 2013) will take up a position as Assistant Professor of Art History at Rollins College (Winter Park, FL) in the fall.
Amy Schwartzott (PhD Candidate) is teaching non-Western art history at Coastal Carolina University.
Jordan Fenton (Ph.D. 2012) is an Assistant Professor of Art History at Kendall College of Art and Design (Grand Rapids, MI).

UF Digital Worlds Institute produces short film that will be shown at the Florida Historic Capitol Museum in Tallahassee, May 31

Join the free Tallahassee premiere of The French in Florida on Friday, May 31 from 6:00 - 8:30 p.m. The film is produced by the UF Digital Worlds Institute for the George A. Smathers Library with assistance from the France-Florida Research Institute. The French in Florida is a digitally animated short film based on the historic Jacques Le Moyne and Theodor de Bry engravings of early Florida. It is narrated by renowned Florida historian Dr. Michael Gannon. James Oliverio, Executive Director of DWI, will describe the development of the project and the digitization process, and historical archaeologist and Theodor de Bry descendant Dr. John de Bry will provide context for these iconic engravings. The Digital Worlds string quartet from the University of Florida will play the original score by Emmy Award-winning composer James Oliverio live during both showings.

UF BFA Graphic Design alum Frankie Batista, shot American actress, singer and songwriter Emmy Rossum for the May 2013 cover of Cosmo en Espanol magazine. Batista has quickly garnered success as a photographer with his broad range of clientele in the editorial, entertainment and music industries. His work extends from brands to record labels to top editorial fashion publications. He travels between Los Angeles, Miami and New York.

When I arrive at [UF BFA alum] Marilyn Minter’s Manhattan studio on an unseasonably warm March afternoon, the artist is presiding over her assistants the way an Old Master might. She lopes around a high-ceilinged room, where six young people are hunched before bright, large-scale canvases, each performing different tasks. Minter is the director-producer of the operation: she corrects details of one painting and then—midthought—wheels around to blurt out another. “Matt, can you hear me?” she says to an assistant who is wearing headphones while he paints. “See—he’s wired in.” In a way, it’s a mix between a Renaissance studio and the programming department at Facebook.

UF SoTD alum Jaime Samson is wardrobe supervisor for 1st National Tour of musical 'Memphis'

UF SoTD alum Jaime Samson took over the reins as the Wardrobe Supervisor on the 1^st National Tour of the musical Memphis. He moved to NYC in August of 2011 after earning his MFA from the University of Florida. By October he was building costumes for Tony Award winners Joel Grey and Sutton Foster (respectively) in Anything Goes; the 80s rockstars in Rock of Ages, as well as dressing the suave gentlemen in Jersey Boys, and the incredibly talented cast of Memphis on Broadway. The second year of the Memphis tour kicked off in September and has been seen coast to coast ever since. The tour ends it’s Equity run in Orlando May 19th so catch it while you can! Jessica Hurov Natalie Morrison

Jessica Hurov will begin her new position as the Public Relations and Marketing Manager for the University of Florida College of Fine Arts on June 3, 2013. She will lead the college’s communication plans in public relations, social media, recruitment, design and marketing.

Natalie Morrison has been promoted to Development and Alumni Affairs Coordinator effective this May 10, 2013 following a successful year as the Coordinator of Development Programs and Donor Fulfillment.

Jessica Hurov, Public Relations and Marketing Manager

Jessica specializes in marketing and strategic communications for the arts and has extensive marketing, public relations, social media, and graphic design expertise. During her career, both in Boston and Gainesville, she has worked in market research, branding, event planning and arts administration. For the past seven years, she has served as the Director of Marketing and Advertising for the Hippodrome Theatre, overseeing marketing, public relations, advertising, graphic design, video and social media efforts for all divisions of the institution. She has worked with Gainesville’s professional arts organizations on the Gainesville Entertainment Sampler, the Chris Morris Arts Education Endowment at P.K. Yonge, and has served as a design partner for Dance Alive National Ballet and the University of Florida’s P.K. Yonge Performing Arts program. Jessica graduated with honors and has dual degrees in English and Psychology from Boston University.

Natalie Morrison, Development and Alumni Affairs Coordinator

In her short time with the college, she has initiated a new donor stewardship program, increased alumni and donor contacts as well as supported and worked with the development team to increase the yield from college fundraisers.

Natalie holds bachelor’s degrees in Art History and Criminology from Florida State University and a master’s degree in Business Management from the University of Florida. Natalie previously worked in membership at the Harn Museum of Art and Centennial Bank.

“Recently, a young alum told me that there was just something special about Natalie. That something special is in her can do attitude, attention to detail, strong work ethic and her joy in making others feel so positive about their involvement in the arts at UF. Her initiative has been a boost for our department. The new responsibilities that accompany this promotion will allow Natalie an opportunity to shine by working with alumni for the benefit of students and to attract support for the College. Natalie has great leadership potential moving forward,” said Jennifer Coolidge, Director of Development, and College of Fine Arts.

UF MA Education alum Jeni Hansen-Gard recently had work selected for Juried National II at Red Lodge Clay Center in Montana

UF Masters in Art Education alumna Jeni Hansen-Gard had work selected for the Juried National II at Red Lodge Clay Center in Red Lodge, MT. Noted Illinois artist and educator Dan Anderson juried the exhibition.

From Red Lodge:

Juror Dan Anderson presents a solid selection of traditional vessel forms in this exhibition, punctuating the array with contemporary forms and processes. Viewers will undoubtedly find a commitment to refined execution, layered cultural references, and sensitive aesthetic fusion common to all the works.

45 works were selected from over 550 submissions. In his statement Anderson indicates the difficulty of juried shows and acknowledges the bias of any given juror. However a juried exhibition is, if nothing else, a snapshot of a moment in time regardless of juror bias. While you peruse the works presented herein, we invite you to consider the implications and the celebrations of the snapshot presented in Red Lodge Clay Center’s Second Bi-Annual Juried National.

UF MFA Photography alumni Jeff Williams and Sabrina Habib to have full time faculty positions at the University of Texas

Beginning in the fall of 2013, UF MFA Photography alumni Jeff Williams and Sabrina Habib will both begin full time faculty positions at the University of Texas. Jeff will teach three courses that involve brainstorming, strategic communication and the adobe creative suite. Sabrina will teach graduate courses in advertising, but they will both collaborate with UT’s fine arts as well, since the colleges share the same building and a student agency there. Before they leave Gainesville, Lisa is teaching a course here at UF during Summer A called Copywriting and Visualization. This class would be especially good for Graphic Design majors but is open to all majors.

Summer A: Copywriting and Visualization (ADV 4101)

This class offers the opportunity to develop the following skills:

- Develop creative strategic messages
- Photoshop, InDesign, and web design (no coding necessary)
- New media, social media and digital advertising strategies
- Creative and critical thinking
- Create video/animation based content marketing
- Creative copywriting

By the end of this course students will have a web site portfolio with two integrated creative campaigns and will have developed new media, social media and strategic proficiencies. Students will learn about the latest media trends in this course. Students of all majors are welcome to enroll in this course.

Students will benefit from this course by enhancing their creative and critical thinking skills, and brainstorming techniques in addition to learning or further developing software abilities.

Since receiving her MFA in 2006, she has been awarded numerous residencies all over the world and has developed an impressive list of exhibitions and teaching experiences. Lisa will be joining the School of Art + Art History this August.
